GB 210 Online Class Slides

These are comprehensive slides that include my discussion notes in the Note view.

I've included lectures recorded in 2007.

Why are you here?  Lecture Part 1,  Part 2

With regards to saving for retirement, there is a great Frontline show, Can you afford to retire? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/retirement/

Market Rise and Markets Fall  Lecture

Although personally painful for many, the current market is an incredible teaching moment. It also shows what happens when we ignore history.
Check out the pbs show: The Ascent of Money after Niall Ferguson's book.

A more comprehensive look would be Commanding Heights after David Yergin's book. In particular, The New Rules of the Game, chapter 5 through the end.

On the current financial crisis, I am impressed by the great job explaining in layman's terms done by This American Life's Giant Pool of Money:

Risk Return  Lecture Part 1, Part 2

Much of this module deals with risk under normal scenarios and what is happening currently is abnormal and known as a "black swan." I think it's important to put this in context by referencing a recent reading:

This article points to the fallacies of using the kind of risk measures we are talking about in this section. In particular, you can look at www.riskgrades.com (referenced in the article), user id GB210 and password GB210 to see a portfolio risk analysis.
